I am facing similar problems. 1. I use the small menubar in my panel. Out of the blue once in a while, the menu hangs when I click on the menu bar. Only Ctrl + Tab works. The gnome-panel remains hanged for around 20-25 seconds. After which everything is fine. The probability of this happening is more once I have started the system.
2. Also, I am noticing an increased delay when I open a browse file dialog from various applications(to select a file or say save a file). The application hangs for 5-10 seconds and then suddenly the file browser appears and application is stable again. I somehow feel both of above issues are related. This is Compaq V4122 laptop running, latest hardy kernel with all other latest updates applied. I have been noticing this since 10 days may be.
