I have managed to 'fix' this problem. I logged in as root, navigated to /var/lib/dpkg/info and did a mv evolution-common.list evolution- common.bak and then I was able to use the Update Manager to upgrade the packages.
It appears that this has nothing to do with Google Earth. I think that was just co-incidence. >From the other postings that I have found since raising this bug, it would appear that there is a bug in Update Manager. For some reason the package information in /var/lib/dpkg/info is getting corrupted - different files each time and sometimes multiple file. I wonder if Update Manager is being a little too quick in closing down the terminal session that it is using to run dpkg? i.e. before dpkg has completed. There is still a bug to be fixed - but there is a workround.
