Additional information:

it happens precisely when I logout from current X-session via the button in 
GNOME-panel.
I did check with after a fresh boot absolutely no additional x-applications 
started (by me).
It also happens (of course) when I logout from x-session, switch to virtual 
terminal 1, login as root, issue commands:
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
/etc/init.d/gdm start
It also happens during every shutdown.

I carefully observed the timestamp in /var/log/messages and it occurs
exactly when I log-out from the x-session.

So I do not have any chance to backtrace according to
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash.
