After an update this morning, I'm able to add a printer. I know the bug descriptor wasn't the best, but unless you digg pretty deeply into cups, I'm not aware of any other way to add a printer (the web interface has always been locked down in ubuntu), so the fact that gnome-cups-add was failing should be read as Average-Joe can't add a printer, and gets no error messege!
