Thanks for the suggestion to try it in Ubuntu hardy heron (8.04). As I mentioned above, other reasons are keeping me from upgrading to hardy, i.e. I want to keep Firefox 2.x while Firefox 3.x is still in beta, some extensions that I use don't work in it, and some web sites that I visit crash it. (Unfortunately, I also don't have other computers on which to install hardy and experiment.) I gather from various blogs and forums that I'm not the only one waiting to upgrade.
