Thank you for not revolting at my tone in my earlier response. I agree we need 
to improve the kernel interface, and the issue has come up in the 
linux1394-devel mailing list. However, I do not forsee a solution coming in the 
near-to-mid-term. In the meantime, I was hoping to give users something more 
comforting than running as root or adding themself to the disk group. raw1394 
group membership is a little more isolated security risk than running as root 
or belonging to disk. Also, it is a little more obvious. Hopefully, the fact 
that the user account created at install is not already a member of such group 
is a reminder of some of the risk.
