I had the same error with fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04, some DVD (e.g. Ice Age) just won't play. On the same hardware I had no problem with upgraded Ubuntu from 7.x to 8.04 to play any DVD I have installed libdvdcss, now I can play Ice Age.
