That's a very convoluted work around. Just put the files in ~/.fonts/
and run fc-cache again, that's all the fonts:// backend ever did
anyways. It's part of the reason some of us don't mind if it doesn't
come back; we really need a new font installation utility instead of a
silly VFS backend.
