This problem does NOT occur on a Dell Optiplex 745 desktop with DVD-ROM CD-RW combo drive, neither before nor after upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy. I have burned several CD ISOs at max speed in Brassero, and they verify (checksum) correctly, also browsing the resultant discs in both Ubuntu and MS-Windows works fine.
