Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Rhythmbox consistently crashes with visualization plugin running Hardy,
2.6.24-16-generic, amd64.

output of apt-cache policy rhythmbox:
 rhythmbox:
   Installed: 0.11.5-0ubuntu4
   Candidate: 0.11.5-0ubuntu4
   Version table:
  *** 0.11.5-0ubuntu4 0
         500 http://mirror.optus.net hardy/main Packages
         100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I recently installed libvisual and manually built the GForce plugin.
When I start visualization and play a track, Rhythmbox crashes. When I
run it from a terminal I get a segmentation fault and core dump. I
understand that it is most likely that it is a bug in the GForce plugin,
or a mismatch between versions of the various packages from Hardy and
the plugin, and It's my fault for picking a bad plugin.

I did expect to be able to deselect the plugin or select a different
one, but there is no way to do this. Selecting Visualization from 'Edit
> plugins' in the menu, the configure button is inactive (greyed out),
and the visualization selection drop-down is only available when plugins
are enabled and music is playing. Therefore, because the plugin causes
rhythmbox to crash, the plugin selection drop-down is no longer
available.

I am happy to disable/remove GForce itself, but I can't even do that
because even after removing the GForce plugin, rhythmbox tries to look
for it and doesn't let me pick another.

This is the real crux of the bug - that there is no easy (read non-
technical non-command line) way of recovering from a bad plugin
selection.
