After repeated HAL initialisation failures, tried yet another install which instigated a Partial Update to remove 1 pakage, install 18 new packages and 'update' 491 packages (a few more than previously), which took two hours and offered a new kernel 2.6.24-16-generic for an incredibly slow boot which displayed non-NTFS, Linux nomenclature drive icons as earlier depicted against Bug Report # 25931, but without error icons and then completely locked up, requiring a hard reset. Earlier kernel 2.6.24-12-generic was selected and a prompter boot up ensued, with normal NTFS drive icons display. A crash report then activated this Bug Report addition, whilst opening Applications, Add/Remove to try adding software. I will try to resume this process and make further functional checks.
