I have reproduced this bug, and if you rename a directory "untitled folder" to ".test" it holds the old name. I did the test on my desktop, and a log out is required to refresh the 'directory'. if you double click "untitled folder" it opens with teh path Desktop/.test . press up (a level) and look - its hidden in nautilus but still visible on the desktop. i'm using gnome 2.14 on Dapper -- After hiding a directory and deleting it afterwards it stays in nautilus visible https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28429
