Hallelulah! I found the problem and the programs affected can be cleared from this bug probably.
After some internet searching I found this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=317489 A simple "sudo ifdown eth0" fixes the problem. Obviously not a solution, but the problem is definitely something with the ethernet. BTW, on Gutsy, my network card was eth1, not eth0. You can close the bug for these programs and I will create a new one if I can find more details on why the ethernet card is interfering with applications.
