Could you check the contents of the Desktop for files not readable by
the current user?

I seem to get a similar error after installing Google Earth with sudo, which 
places this file on my Desktop:
-rw------- 1 root root 414 Feb 19 21:16 Google-googleearth.desktop

Changing permissions to readable by all, or changing file ownership both
fix the problem.
