Effect #3 above [the desktop background image] issue changed a few days after the 12/10 submittal without efforts by myself. The desktop image now acts normally and is no longer an issue.
Because I remain up-to-date, a software update from the repository may be responsible for the change. However -- my perception is that the change was the result of a variation in startup conditions. The first time I unplugged from the desktop charger and went on the road with the laptop and booted with battery power only, the image restored itself and remains restored on both power supply options since that event. I have noted a new inconsistency however. For Gnome upper panel the right-hand icons are "time-of-day" and "shutdown selector icon". These two features always exist -- however they alternate position from time to time. The inverted display order is not tied to any event I have been able to associate with. The "bottom line"? The Gnome desktop exhibits certain instabilities of minor consequence -- except it is quite unsettling to my anal nature wanting absolute repetition [predictability] in every small detail.
