It is how it is supposed to work and it usually works. I noticed it doesn't currently work on ntfs partition ( see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-vfs2/+bug/106621 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-vfs/+bug/140968 ), do you have this problem with another filesystem ?
