This is a really weird bug, but I could reproduce it on three different
Gutsy installations now, so I suppose it's true :-)
So: moving the mouse cursor diagonally (basically from top left to
bottom right) over the main entries in the "Application" menu will make
the menu respond with ca. 0.5 seconds delay. The steeper the angle, the
more likely that this happens.
Detailed step-by-step guide:
- open the Application menu
- move the mouse cursor onto the icon of the first menu entry
- now move the mouse cursor in a straight line to the small (right-hand-side)
arrow of the next entry
- observe that the actual menu focus doesn't change immediately - there is a
easily noticeable delay before the focus change is visible and the lower
submenu opens
- notice that moving the cursor straight down instead will not lead to any
(noticeable) delay.
This seems to be a general GTK menu bug. It can be reproduced also in
other applications (like gnome-terminal), but it only seems to happen if
a menu item with a submenu is involved. Also it only happens if cursor
is moved _towards_ the submenu (if the submenu opens to the left like it
may do on small screens, the bug will occur only when moving the cursor
from top right to bottom left).
Also I could reproduce this behavior on a Debian Testing machine.
I think this bug can lead to a perceived bad responsiveness of the UI;
even if the user does not actively notice this delay, he will notice
that the menu does not _exactly_ follow his input. I would very much
appreciate a fix for this.
