Ok, I have some comment which might be related. I found yesteday when I upgraded via commandline from feisty to gutsy PDFs opened but appeared totally blank with evince. They were fine with acroread and they were fine with epdfview which also relies on the poppler libraries.
But then I noticed that evince was set to a zoom of 400% (not sure whether this was my fault or not) and I set it to 100% - immediately the pdf appeared fine. When I then went back to 400% zoom it zoomed fine and had no display problem.
