I have this same bug that only occurs when a user has the 3D effects turned on. I just switched to an nVidia FX5200 PCI video card connected to an LCD via DVI. I can, however, press CNTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE to get back to the user that I just switched from ok. This is on a 3 year old CyberPower PC (aka custom built by a less known manufacturer). This is happening with Gutsy final release.
