I have created a new user and I have been unable to replicate the problem. After removing any gnome/gtk related .files in my home directory the problem has now disappeared. Theme previews are also working again.
I think this is down to bad house keeping in my home directory. I have just come from a 2 year old Gentoo install. Please close this bug as this was not an Ubuntu problem.
