I have a similar issue. Installed Gutsy Tribe 5 on my laptop and then updated it to the latest available version. It doesn't take minutes but is pretty slow (I didn't take the time but it is significantly slower than it was on feisty, as far as I can tell.).
After I enter my password the mousecursor shows up in front of an empty screen. After some time GNOME starts to load the panels, the launchers (on the panel) and the background.
