oops... it appears that i could have had a file protection problem - the files where protected 600 in a directory protected 775 (i cannot see why. it is .lyx) and i wanted to paste them into a similarly protected directory (again 775). i guess the later was causing the failue.
then my bug should perhaps move to the wish list: cut/pasate should not silently fail when protection does not allow read or write of the file, but inform the user.
