It's not easily reproduceable. But it only happens with metacity not with compiz. They difference between them is purely graphical (the on-screen volume slider thingie), so we can only expect that this is where it is triggered. The top of the stack trace above also suggests this (libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0) where the bad call was made.
