Looks like powernowd has two parts. Kernel module(s) and the client
daemon or whatever. If apt-get removal doesn't help you - your problem
is kernel modules. Oops. I have similar case with some of the kernel
modules, computer hangs when playing video and the problem is one of the
kernel modules. Unfortunately I don't know which and even though I have
lots of them blacklisted they get automatically loaded. Like you, after
booting I have to run script which does bunch of rmmod's and that helps.

Justin, I guess I can say that I have no more freezes. Only deadhangs,
but that's another story ;-=--)
