Comment: I also have this problem using a Radeon Mobility 7500. I can reproduce this using xscreensaver-demo, going to "Settings", "Advanced>>" and changing the Visual to "Default". With this setting I get what appears to be an effect identical to what gnome-screensaver is doing. It only seems to flicker with "Default" or "Default-N".
