Craig et al.,
I'm sure that I speak for the majority here when I say that some
off-topic discussion is not only tolerable, but often times
appreciated. The list has always worked that way, and it has always
worked well. Most of the people who post regularly spend the majority
of their time helping others out of the kindness of their heart, yet
sometimes we also have questions on loosely related topics, and I'm very
thankful for that because most of the time I learn something useful from
such discussions. I'm sorry that you feel the way that you do, but I
would be much more disappointed if I or others were prohibited from
discussing such matters, and as a community we would all suffer from
banning such things because old-timers would find little to offer here,
and newcomers would not benefit from their experience if they were to leave.
I think that you rubbed not only me, but also Evans, the wrong way by
being presumptuous about the "rules" of this list. I think that it's
equally bad to attack others on a personal level on this list (in most
instances). Such discussions are of course the most undesirable ones to
have on this list, but it has always worked out in the past and I hope
that it continues to work itself out without the need for anyone to come
in here and lay down the law, and of course without the need to
continually discuss such matters.
Matt
