Doesn't look to be in there. Maybe I should upgrade my version and try again? I see absolutely no reason to go to 8 right now, and don't have issues that WHITELIST AUTH would help...but I would feel left out still tagging mail from my own authenticated users. What to do???

Hmmm. So WHITELIST AUTH does not work with IMail 7.x?
You would have to check with Ipswitch to be sure. My understanding is that they started including the information in the Q*.SMD file with v7.10, but haven't confirmed it. It is definitely there for v8.x.
Why is it enabled by default in the latest global.cfg and there are no comments indicating that it works only with IMail 8?
Because there will be no problems with previous versions of IMail. It just won't whitelist authenticated users.
Does WHITELIST HABEAS have similar restrictions, or does it work with IMail 7.x?
That's a completely different option. "WHITELIST AUTH" checks to see if a user has authenticated, so it requires cooperation from IMail. "WHITELIST HABEAS" looks to see if the E-mail has the Habeas headers, which does not require any cooperation from IMail (and therefore works with any version of IMail that Declude works with, which is v5 and later).
