Why does this page render badly?

You are seeing this message because you are using Netscape 4.x or another browser with poor support for the HTML 4.01 and CSS 1 specifications. The information on this site should still be readable with your browser, however, you'll find it looks much better with a standards-compliant browser such as Mozilla or Netscape 7.0.

Known Issues and Plugin Locations for Java Runtime Environment

Known Issues

Sun's JRE will crash at startup if your useragent does not begin with Mozilla/5. See bug 83376.

Plugin Locations

If you did a system-wide install of JRE 1.4.0 as root, libjavaplugin_oji140.so is located in /usr/java/j2re1.4.0/plugin/i386/ns610/
If you did a system-wide install of another version of JRE 1.4.x as root, libjavaplugin_oji.so is located in /usr/java/j2re[VERSION]/plugin/i386/ns610/

New To It All?

If you're not familiar with symbolic linking, permissions and all, there's 2 ways to do this.
First is to log in as root, and use the following command at a console, replacing [VERSION] and [Mozilla Installation Directory] with the appropriate values for your installation (eg. 1.4.1 and /opt/mozilla): ln -s /usr/java/j2re[VERSION]/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so [Mozilla Installation Directory]/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
Second is to create ~/.mozilla/plugins if it doesn't exist, and use the followng command: ln -s /usr/java/j2re[VERSION]/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so ~/.mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

The second method is preferred, as it bypasses the permissions issue completely. You can also create the link using Konqueror or other GUI file managers.
