The reason for this is that the greeter frontend crashes. So your issue might be unrelated to lightdm itself.

What lightdm Greeter variant do you have installed. As root, please check /var/log/lightdm/seat0-greeter.log (or similar files) for more reasons for the greeter UI crashing.
