Today I reinstalled the radeon card. I ran the card for about two hours with the latest radeon driver and kernel as you described and I haven't seen the probelm. However my main reason for have a 3D accelerated card in the first place is blender and I this has still some serious issues with the free driver, see also my bugreport http://bugs.debian.org/cgi- bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=568766. I was hoping the performance issues were brought down to an acceptable level but unfortunately, they aren't.
