After checking carefully the aptitude log, I have found that xserver-xorg-{core,common} were updated yesterday morning. This part of the changelog might be of interest: * 15-keep-udev-x11-driver.diff: keep looking for the x11_driver udev property as a transitional measure. This should allow the new server to work while drivers aren't transitioned to xorg.conf.d yet. After downgrading these packages to the previous version (2:1.7.6-1), things work fine again. I hence reassign this bug to xserver-xorg-core (feel free to change it if that's not right). To xserver-xorg-core maintainers: my local udev rules file which lets me set the correct options to the synaptics driver doesn't seem to be taken into account in the last version available in sid, despite the 15-keep-udev-x11-driver.diff patch.
