Thanks, I think when I got this card radeon wouldn't do 2D accel but radeonhd did, so I went with that one. radeon seems to be working fine now so I'll switch to that. If XSF considers radeonhd deprecated a note to that effect might be worthwhile, nothing in the apt description nor on the radeonhd X.org wiki page implies that to someone who doesn't follow the development.
