Sorry, I have two difficulties to answer this question. The least important: now I use Arch Linux on that machine, but I suppose things should not be very different between different distros. I may say the driver version and say that I have no xorg.conf in Arch.
The most important: I seldom have access to a video projector. I only have when I have to give a presentation, and to make matters worse in several on them they already have a computer connected and you plug your USB drive (I suppose for the sake of saving time). Next time I have access to a projector I will let you know, but you will have to be *very* patient. By the way, some time ago a person emailed privately to me to ask whether I solved the problem. So there are people reading this but not writing: I strongly encourage *you who are reading this* to collaborate here.
