OK, done some more testing. vesa from unstable only gives me 800x600 or 640x480 but only if /etc/Xorg/xorg.conf is configured for Driver "vesa" manually. The same setting (or no mention of a driver at all) using the packages in testing gives me my more familiar 1024x768. This is not a solution, it's simply downgrading the entire Xorg system to the version in testing. It would be a lot better if the nv driver could support my nv chipset. I have also verified that I was wrong about vga - the vesa package from testing is the only one that is now installed and the vesa package in unstable works but at a resolution that is unusable for real work.
