I've done so, but I won't be able to see if that makes a difference until I get home. I don't think that's it, though -- AFAICT, XkbBell is in libX11, and my rebuilt xterm doesn't depend on libxkbfile. Rather, I'm sheepishly starting to suspect a configuration error on my side; it seems that one key difference between XkbBell and plain old XBell is that applications can globally hook the former and redirect its output elsewhere, such as to the headphones I generally only wear when I'm actually playing some form of media. (The system on which I observed the problem is a desktop with a dedicated speaker for system beeps.) I'll follow up once I'm actually back in front of the system in question. -- Aaron M.
