I have a very similiar problem, but with the driver mga. The problem started only after upgrading to lenny. My video card is Matrox G450. The problem presents itself with XVideo (and XVIDIX), but not at all with "normal" X11-output. And yes, the problem appeared only after upgrading from etch to lenny (X.Org 7.1 -> 7.3.): there were no problems with XVideo in etch.
The problem presents itself both when running MPlayer and VLC (own builds, though I also tried apt-getting the stock mplayer package, which had the exact same problems - seems like it's nothing to do with the video player). The screen seems like it's "flickering" or "out of sync" when using "XVideo" output driver - much the same effect when an analog VGA cable is loose, or an analog TV is mistuned, or a CRT screen is warming up, but the pattern is static - you can pause the video and it's still saw-toothed, but the pattern is also "paused" and not "moving" until the play is resumed. Subtitles are almost unreadable when the screen is scrabbled like this: the sawtoothing is *very* annoying. The problem is not there when using -vo x11 in MPlayer. The problem IS there exactly the same way when using -vo xvidix (MPlayer XVIDIX output). The problem appears both in XVideo windowed and full-screen modes. The only way I found to come around this is to run MPlayer with -vo x11 and adjust the screen to a suitable resolution with Ctrl+Alt+-/+ and let the resolution do the scaling for you.
