It could be yet another machine needing a AGPMode quirk. Can you try the 6.11.0 package at http://people.debian.org/~bgoglin/rebuilds/ati-6.11.0-Xserver1.4/ in case it has already been fixed since Lenny 6.9.0 was released? If it doesn't help, please try adding Option "AGPMode" "1" or "2" or "8" to your device section in xorg.conf and reports which ones help.
