On some hardware autodetection is simply not possible. This may include some very old cards (which may be detected by lspci or whatnot) but also modern cards with long cabling, lame (K)V(M) switches, etc. So an option for setting the values without studying the xorg.conf format of the current X mutation would be preferable. It should be clearly stated that this is a last resort after the configuration has been debugged and found not capable of autodetection but there should still be such option.
