Today I upgraded my lenny install with the latest and had to reboot (for other reasons), but when I tried to login to my normal account I, it returned me fairly quickly to the login screen. Quick research showed that session startup could not open the display. I use WindowMaker and this is the error it gives in .xsession-errors Xsession: X session started for jeff at Thu Jul 10 15:13:42 EDT 2008 Protocol not supported by server xrdb: Can't open display ':0' Protocol not supported by server Protocol not supported by server /usr/lib/WindowMaker/WindowMaker fatal error: could not open display ":0" If I try to start up in KDE, it gives a longer but basically similar message: startkde: Starting up... Protocol not supported by server ksplash: cannot connect to X server :0 Protocol not supported by server xprop: unable to open display ':0' Protocol not supported by server kdeinit: Can't connect to the X Server. kdeinit: Might not terminate at end of session. Protocol not supported by server kded: cannot connect to X server :0 Protocol not supported by server kcminit_startup: cannot connect to X server :0 Protocol not supported by server Protocol not supported by server ksmserver: cannot connect to X server :0 startkde: Shutting down... klauncher: Exiting on signal 1 startkde: Running shutdown scripts... Protocol not supported by server xprop: unable to open display ':0' startkde: Done. I can start up a session as root which seems to confirm the permissions notion.
