Sorry to sound slightly clueless, but what does that mean ? How do I
specify what card driver to use without a xorg.conf ?
Just move xorg.conf away from /etc/X11, the X server is now capable of
automatically configuring itself (except for the keyboard keymap to
choose, setxkbmap is helpful then).
