I was running sarge happily with no issues but recently upgraded to etch and struck a similar problem trying to start X.
I've been away from Linux for a while and when I struck the problem I thought something may have gone wrong with my upgrade, and completely re-installed my / partition, but still had the problem, when using the daily built image installer (netboot). Anyway, when I tried to install etch using the official release instead of the daily built image X started again. I took a back up of the xorg.conf then tried installing the daily built image again - but back to the same problem with X, even if I revert to the older xorg.conf (with i180 specified as the Device driver). Eventually I found this bug, and just changing "intel" to "vesa" gets X working again. But I'm not sure if I have the exact same problem, so here is my log. Regards, David
