OK, restarted the machine, seemed to work OK to start X and quit, getting the console back. In the end, I needed to play with the PanelSize option, since it listed 1280x1024 as an available option for the VGA output, but only 640x480 for LVDS (it's actually not a laptop, but a cheapo machine with an on-board ATI chip).
