this was reported on Ubuntu too:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/debian/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/141533

and reverting commit 5d044b9f74c7aa7e12f2822896fed881e2ca9d19 provided a 
workaround for now.
