Bug#442915 can be closed. In xorg.conf, I needed to specify InputDevice "USB Mouse" "SendCoreEvents" It is odd that the old setting with InputDevice "USB Mouse" "CorePointer" worked fine for all previous versions of xorg. However, I still cannot start the Xserver to start on the Thinkpad without xorg.conf, and actually I get the same error about framebuffer mentioned above with a different computer, also tracking unstable. This does not really bother me now that my xorg.conf is set correctly, but maybe you consider it important.
