That seems very likely. I suggest switching back to the console with Ctrl-Alt-F1, login as root then save /var/log/Xorg.0.log and look into it. Indeed, if Ctrl-Atl-F1 bring the login screen back, then the probability of the bug being an X bug is 100%..:-)
