We just need to locate the bad instruction in the maintainer scripts. As I told Russell earlier, one way to do so might be to add "set -x" at the beginning (not the first #! line, but right after it) of /var/lib/dpkg/info/x11-common.* and run dpkg-reconfigure x11-common.
