I can't reproduce the problem here. If I log in gdm on :0, I can startx
xterm in :1 and startx another regular session in :2, all of them behave
as expected.
What client is supposed to launch here? Does it help if you change the
client, for instance with
startx /usr/bin/xterm -- :1
?
