I think I can confirm this bug. (I am not sure it is the same, but I think so).

"bitchx" or other programs. aterm does not seem to be effected.
"Somtimes". The problem is in reproducing it. If you retry the same
command sequence, can you get it to break again?
Well, the sometimes should be rather "with some programs". E.g. when
starting bitchx, man, mutt... it *always* kills the terminal. When using
other applications: emacs, gv, ls, xterm itselves,... there is no problem.
