Apparently for some reason /proc didn't get mounted that time when I booted into the unstable installation, and that was the cause of the above trouble. Sorry for the noise. I can confirm that xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.0.0-5 restores the console properly with vga=ext, so I think this bug can be closed.
