Do you have xrandr 1.2 installed? What does "xrandr" say? Does "xrandr --verbose" show the modes listed above? Did you select your mode with "xrandr --mode 1280x1024"? Work is ongoing in the server to make xorg.conf redundant altogether. One thing you could try is deleting xorg.conf completely and seeing what kind of success you get.
